CBD oil for dogs – background, benefits and concerns

CBD oil for dogs, we’re all familiar with the term CBD at this stage but what does it mean and more specifically what does it do for our dogs?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol(CBD) is the non-psychoactive extract of the cannabis plant. It is considered an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions in both humans and dogs.

What does CBD oil do for dogs?

Using CBD can reduce inflammation in the body, reduce pain and induce a state of calm without having negative side effects. The endocannabinoid system in dogs is a system that regulates biological functions through neurotransmitters and receptors. It helps maintain a healthy balance throughout your dog’s brain and body. Full spectrum hemp oil can influence and regulate the endocannabinoid system.

Although the ECS communicates using its own naturally produced endocannabinoids, there are a number of clinical studies confirming the beneficial interaction between the canine ECS and non-psychoactive CBD to help dogs with arthritis, anxiety, allergies, cancer and seizures.

If you’ve decided to continue on a CBD journey for your pawfect friend, what are the important points to look out for when sourcing a quality CBD oil? Let’s begin…

CBD Oil: Full spectrum, broad spectrum or isolate?

There are 3 main types of CBD oil.

Full Spectrum CBD = All the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that naturally occur in hemp, including cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabigerol (CBG).

Broad Spectrum CBD = Same as Full Spectrum, however, the cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has been fully removed. Broad spectrum CBD oils are generally used amongst athletes.

CBD Isolate = Only features one single type of cannabinoid – cannabidiol (CBD).

Full spectrum and broad spectrum feature a unique array of compounds, which are preferred for their health benefits. When these compounds (except CBD) are stripped they give CBD isolate. CBD isolate does not have the same additional benefits as full or broad spectrum CBD oils.

THC concerns in CBD oil for dogs

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the element that causes psychoactive effects. According to regulations hemp extract must contain less than 0.3% THC. If your dog’s CBD contains more than 0.3% THC, it’s probably marijuana and not hemp. It’s not legal and your dog won’t enjoy the psychoactive effects. Atlas and Tail CBD drops contain less than 0.2% THC ensuring its safe usage.

Hemp Oil & Hemp Seed Oil – what’s the difference and what should I look for?

Hemp oil is derived from the flower whereas Hemp seed oil is derived from the seed. Seed oil is beneficial for dogs as it contains healthy Omegas 3 and 6. Omega 6 is rich in GLA which has its own benefits which you can read about here. However, if you’re looking for your CBD to protect against disease, reduce inflammation and offer pain relief then hemp oil derived from the flower is the better option.

Atlas & Tail CBD drops are a full spectrum hemp oil, derived from the flower and can help manage several health conditions, including cancer, pain and seizures. Our CBD oil is extracted via CO2 which creates a higher concentration of CBD, meaning your dog will benefit more from our supplement.

CBD for dogs is currently an unregulated industry, therefore, ensure to check the purity of the CBD oil you’re looking to purchase. At Atlas & Tail, we can provide you with a certificate of analysis for the CBD oil we produce. You can request the latest analysis by emailing us at info@atlasandtail.com.

Carrier oil

One of the oils we use is salmon oil as the carrier for our CBD, with refined filtration. Salmon oil greatly improves the absorption of CBD and contains healthy omegas.

Our other option is coconut oil – Coconut oil is considered one of the best carriers for CBD. It also improves the absorption of CBD and has a sweeter taste to mask the earthy punch of CBD.

Onto the good stuff, the benefits of CBD oil for dogs

To reiterate, Atlas & Tail CBD drops are a full spectrum hemp oil derived from the flower. This provides the widest range of benefits for dogs compared to hemp oil derived from the seed, broad spectrum oils or CBD isolate.

Now that we’ve explained the differences between flower and seed, and full and broad spectrums – what are the benefits to our four-legged friends?

Benefits of CBD oil for dogs
Relieves pain

Relieves pain – great for arthritis & joint pain. CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and nervous system and this helps manage your dog’s response to pain.

Reduces inflammation

Reduces inflammation. CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory which works by binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors associated with the nervous and immune systems. These receptors stimulate the immune system to reduce inflammation.

epilepsy and seizures

Can help in managing epilepsy and seizures because of how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. It’s believed that abnormal electric charges of the neurons in the nervous system cause seizures. But CBD can bind to receptors in the brain with researchers speculating an improvement in the nervous system.

Reduces anxiety and stress

Reduces anxiety and stress when given over a period of time, due to it’s interaction with serotonin receptors.

cardiovascular health

Promotes cardiovascular health due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties produced by CBD.

anti-nausea effects

Has anti-nausea effects due to its natural properties and interaction with serotonin receptors.

Hemp oil is a natural supplement. It has been shown not to cause any dangerous side effects compared to prescribed drugs on the market aimed at these conditions. Some side effects may include dry-mouth, vomiting, diarrhea or tiredness.

There are continuing studies on the benefits of CBD oil in disease prevention and symptom mitigation. These benefits can no doubt lead to an improvement on quality of life.

What dosage of CBD oil does my dog need?

Atlas & Tail have three different strengths of the highest quality hemp oil. When choosing which strength to purchase, your decision should be based on the severity of your dog’s symptoms.

The options available are 3%, 5% and 10%;

3% – Mild pain, mild anxiety, mild symptoms in general

5% – Moderate pain, moderate anxiety, moderate symptoms in general

10% – Severe pain, severe anxiety, cancer, epilepsy

Only you know how much pain your dog is in or how anxious they are. It is best for you to make the decision as to what strength your dog needs.

Can I overdose my dog with CBD?

Each bottle contains a dosage guideline to ensure you give the correct amount. Every batch of CBD Oil is lab tested to ensure the correct levels of CBD are present. As with most supplements, we recommend you proceed with added caution and monitor your dog’s behaviour on their journey. Reducing the dosage or removing accordingly.
